Online Workshop: Historical Fiction

A 2-hour online workshop to learn about writing historical fiction, with writer Carolyn Kirby.

Join Carolyn Kirby (The Conviction of Cora Burns and When We Fall) for an online historical fiction workshop that will focus on channelling your imagination into the building blocks of fiction.

Through a mix of presentation, discussion and writing exercises, Carolyn will explore techniques that can help you place yourself inside the world of your characters. Using visual sources from the past as well as writing extracts, the workshop will show how research can be a stimulus to creating stories with a historical setting.

The session will also provide pointers to the successful translation of imagined scenes into the language of fiction.

For writers of all levels of experience, including beginners.

About the workshop leader:

Carolyn Kirby’s debut novel The Conviction of Cora Burns was nominated for awards from the Historical Writers’ Association and the Crimefest/Specsavers prize. Her most recent novel, When We Fall was chosen by the Times as one of the ten best historical novels of 2020.
