The Transition with Luke Kennard
April 21 @ 6:00 pm - 7:15 pm
£8/£6.40 (concessions). Festival Pass: FREE
Your rent outstrips your earnings. You’re in debt, in trouble, facing eviction – what do you do?
In Luke Kennard’s brilliant dystopia you join The Transition, a life-improvement scheme for Generation Rent. A six month breather from the burden of debt and an opportunity to begin again: what’s not to like?
Kennard’s vision of the near future is tender, fierce, and funny. Isy Suttie says it’s “completely gripping”. The Guardian hails both “the Black Mirror-style black comedy” and “the tenderly devastating portrait of mental illness”. The Transition was broadcast as a BBC Radio 4 ‘Book at Bedtime’ in February.
Luke is an award-winning poet, critic and writer of fiction. He teaches creative writing at the University of Birmingham. The Transition is his first novel.
Luke will be in conversation with Dawn Foster, writer on politics, social affairs and economics for The Guardian, London Review of Books, Independent and Times Literary Supplement, and a regular political commentator for Sky News, Channel 4 News, and BBC Newsnight. Her first book, Lean Out, is on feminism, austerity and corporate culture.
Eligible for the Birmingham Literature Festival Spring Edition Pass.
